WASHINGTON — The Procter & Gamble Company is recalling specific lots of Iams canned cat food in North America. The Consumer Product Safety Commission said tests show that the cat food may not have enough thiamine, which is Vitamin B-1. Cats must have Vitamin B-1 and those that were fed the food have a greater risk of thiamine deficiency. Early signs of thiamine deficiency include loss of appetite, excessive saliva, vomiting and weight loss. In advanced cases, cats may have downward curving of their necks, wobbly gaits, falling, circling and seizures. If treated promptly, thiamine deficiency is reversible. Cans being recalled are 3-ounce and 5.5-ounce Iams Proactive Health canned cat and kitten food. Dates on the bottom of the affected cans are 09/2011 to 06/2012. If you have the cans, get rid of them and call Procter & Gamble toll-free at 877-340-8826 Monday through Friday, 8 to 6.
