OTTAWA — The Ottawa school board reviewed students’ test scores Monday night. Supt. Dean Katt said there were some improvements but that overall scores were mostly flat with some lower scores among subcategories of students such as at-risk and special education. Eisenhower and Garfield elementary schools and Ottawa Middle School failed to meet AYP and the district failed to make AYP in the subcategory of special education students. To a certain extent, that was because the school dropped summer school for elementary and middle school students and increased class sizes and fewer teachers because of cost-cutting, he said. The school restarted summer school for this year, he said. Katt said as standards continue to increase and funding for schools decrease, it will be harder for schools to meet standards.
