It’s not a big secret that Americans waste a lot of food. Not just at home as consumers, it starts on the farm. The numbers, though, might be staggering to some. Dr. Tara McCue directs the USDA’s Western Regional Research Center and says the volume of food waste and the dollar amount associated with it are immense.
She adds that globally, between 25-33% of food produced is lost as waste. This comes on the heels of recent data that shows that one in seven Americans are food insecure. The Agriculture Department is now part of a food waste challenge, with a goal to cut food waste in half by the year 2030.
