OTTAWA — The Ottawa city commissioners continued working on next year’s budget during their meeting Monday afternoon. They looked at the rest of the city general fund, which funds most city departments and is the main day-to-day operations fund, and heard budget requests from the city band, the Veterans Day committee and from the Prairie Paws animal shelter, the former Bea Martin Peck Animal Shelter. City manager Richard Nienstedt said commissioners aren’t just concerned about the spending, they’re watching their revenues. The county valuation – the relative wealth of the county – dropped slightly, a sign that the economy has affected property values, he said. However, the decline wasn’t as steep as Nienstedt feared. He said that he hopes the city’s sales tax receipts continue to show growth over last year.
