GARNETT — The city of Garnett and the Kansas Cepartment of Transportation will honor Garnett-native Aarthur Capper. There will be a ceremony honoring Capper next week during the Garnett City Commission meeting. The state will install three highway signs recognizing Capper around Garnett. The city also is renovating the Capper memorial at Fifth and Cedar streets. The monument will be refurbished and an informational kiosk, similar to the one at the Donna Harris Memorial Park at Fourth and Oak, will be added. Capper was the first Kansas governor to be born in the state. He served as U.S. senator for 30 years and helped pass federal laws that allowed farm cooperatives. He was also a newspaper publisher and created the Capper Foundation to help children with disabilities.
