The COVID-19 crisis brought on an extension for filing both federal and state income taxes, but one tax that did not get ana extension is property tax and the deadline for the second half of Anderson county taxpayers property tax is Monday.  Anderson county treasurer Dena McDaniel says no delay or moratorium on those second-half taxes had been authorized by Kansas law, and all applicable deadlines and penalties were still in effect. She says the tax revenue funds various budgets in multiple jurisdictions, most of which are critical in funding public safety, and the governor is unable to change the structure and even if she could, probably would not because it would cut public safety and education funding sources during a public health emergency.

There are penalties for paying late or underpaying. In Anderson county, the interest rate applier to late payments on real estate is 11 percent. The interest on delinquent personal property is 6 percent. McDaniel says interest on late or underpayment of $10,000 or more for real property is 15 percent, and for $10,000 or more personal property is 10 percent.
