WASHINGTON — Rocky Mountain Natural Meats, Henderson, Colo., is recalling 34 tons of ground bison and tenderized bison steak. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service said that the bison meat may be connected with an outbreak of e-coli illnesses in six people in Colorado and New York. The bison meat was sold nationally and although the expiration dates is passed, regulators say consumers may have some of the meat in freezers. Brands subject to recall include Great Range Brand All Natural ground bison, 16-ounce packages “sell or freeze by” date of June 21, June 22 or June 24; Nature’s Rancher ground buffalo, 16-ounce packages “sell or freeze by” date of June 22; The Buffalo Guys All Natural Ground Buffalo 90% lean ground buffalo, 16-ounce packages lot number of 0147; Great Range Brand All Natural bison steak medallions, 12-ounce packages with “sell or freeze by” date of June 23 and June 24, 2010; Great Range Brand All Natural bison sirloin steaks, 12-ounce packages with “sell or freeze by” date of June 20, June 23 and June 24, 2010; Rocky Mountain Natural Meats, 15-pound boxes of 10-ounce sirloin steaks which went to restaurants and bear a Julian code of 0141; and Bison B Trim, which also went to restaurants and production date of May 21, 2010, and a Julian code of 14110.
