GARNETT — The Garnett 150 Committee is planning a year-long birthday party for the city’s 150th next year. The party has gotten off to an early start. The Walker Art Committee recently selected Nell stockdall of Garnett as the winner of the city logo contest. A photography contest is under way, with the winners to be included in a special 150th calendar for 2011 and receive cash prizes. The Garnett Area Chamber of Commerce is seeking scrapbook pages before Nov. 30 from businesses, churches, civic organizations and families for a time capsule. Last week, the Garnett City Commission, tourism board and the Kansas Department of Transportation unveiled new highway signs honoring Garnett native Arthur Capper. Capper’s 150th is also next year. He was a former publisher, governor, U.S. senator and founded the Capper Foundation for children in Topeka.
