GARNETT — Garnett city manager Joyce Martin says she must cut about $200,000 from the budget to avoid a property tax increase for next year. But Martin told the Anderson County Review that’s going to be a tough job. Martin said she does not want to increase the city’s mill levy increase for next year, but that will almost impossible without deep cuts in city services. Garnett has lost nearly $70,000 in its assessed valuation, she said. Assessed valuation is the relative wealth of all property in the city and is the basis of property taxes. Usually, when assessed valuation goes down, a government has to raise property taxes to generate the same revenue. In addition, Martin said the city is making a lot less in interest revenue from its investments.
