TOPEKA — The Kansas June unemployment rate showed mixed results in the area. The unemployment slightly increased in Franklin County and the Lawrence area, held steady in Miami County and fell in surrounding counties. Kansas Labor Department’s Sue Henke said those numbers mirror the state numbers. Kansas experienced a overall decline in jobs in June, but the above average increase in private sector jobs is a good indicator that the economy is improving, she said. Two sectors, construction and trade, transportation and utilities showed the most improvement, with the trade transportation, and utilities sector experiencing its first over-the-year job gains since July 2008, she said. The Franklin County jobless rate increased from 8.3 percent in May to 8.4 percent in June. However, the jobless rate is still lower than it was a year ago, which was 10.3 percent. Miami County’s rate stayed at 6.8 percent. The unemployment rate for Anderson, Osage, Coffey and Linn counties fell slightly.
