GARNETT — Since the new Anderson County jail opened nearly a year ago, some low-risk inmates have helped wash cars and clean. They are “trusties” — inmates who are carefully selected by jail administrators to do some chores. Sheriff Scot Brownrigg told the Anderson County Review that using trustie labor saves costs at a minimal security risk. Because they have more freedom, many inmates enjoy being trusties. Anderson County commissioners are looking at expanding the trustie program to allow inmates to work outside the jail, such as maintenance on the health department building. Brownrigg said there are other issues such as insurance and security to be ironed out before the program can be expanded.
