OTTAWA — Ottawa has received a nearly $371,000 grant to build sidewalks and a bicycle lane along West 15th Street between the Prairie Spirit Trail and Eisenhower Road.
Ottawa city planning director Wynndee Lee said she’s delighted that the city received the grant. The federal money will pay 80 percent of the costs of the work, with the city picking up the rest of the tab, she said. The city is also responsible for designing the project, she said. The city received solid support from local businesses and the community, she said. So many people submitted letters of support that the city had to cut back on its own application explanation, she said. Lee said she believes that community support was a major factor why the city got the grant. Construction should begin early next year, she said. The Kansas Department of Transportation, which is administering the federal grant program, said it picked 18 projects including Ottawa’s for its transportation enhancement program. Iola also received a grant to extend the Prairie Spirit Trail, which runs from Ottawa through Garnett and to Iola, inside the city limits.
