GARNETT — As the heat keeps rolling up, the meters are spinning. Garnett’s water plant has treating water 22 hours a day in recent days during the heat wave, said city manager Joyce Martin. Normally, the plant will produce water about 17 hours a day, she said. So far, the city has been able to buy electricity from a municipal power cooperative for the city’s electric utility needs even though the demand for power has jumped, she said. The city can generate its own power but because it’s more expensive, Garnett buys electricity until there’s no more available from its power sources or it’s too expensive to buy, she said.
