GARNETT — The south side of the square in downtown Garnett once was thought to be the seedier part of town. It once was the site of a murder. And it was the home of bars and good-time hotels where the bootleg whiskey flowed and the girls were accommodating. But in the past year, the south side has seen a rejuvenation that has returned the flow of business and people to the downtown square. Craig Cole, business building owner and Garnett attorney, tells the Anderson County Review that hasn’t been a result of an organized effort. Cole said he was impressed by a remodel at Salon Connection at the southeast corner of the square at Fifth and Main and he hired Bob Salazar, the contractor who did much of the work, to do the same for him. Other business owners followed suit and hired Salazar. Relatively new restaurants such as Denise’s Country Cafe and the Coffee Loft also have brought many people to the south side of the square for dining.
