Cody Gettler is the youngest candidate, 24 years old, he grew up in Garnett and has been involved in several community organizations. He helped create the Youth In Government Program, where he attended all City Commission meetings and learned first hand of the city’s operations. After graduating from KU, he moved back to Garnett. He says he is running because he wants to be involved in city government. He says his focus, if elected, will be the Garnett Airport Project supporting local business and bringing in more industry. Also, increasing senior housing and bringing more transparency and fiscal responsibility. He says Garnett has many valuable assets and opportunity for growth.
The other candidate for City Commission is Eugene Grimes. He was born and raised in the Garnett area. He believes Garnett is a great little town and he wants to give something back. He ran last year against Greg Gwin, narrowly losing the race. He believes he can make a difference. He says he would like to put in more power spots at Cedar Valley Reservoir to get more fees from campers. He would be in hopes to bring more people to the area and generate more sales tax revenue. He believes Garnett is growing and will continue as more and more houses in the city are being purchased and fixed up. He says he is passionate about the interests of everyone in the Garnett area.
