LYNDON — The Wells Bailey House in the Lyndon City Park has been nominated to the Register of Historic Kansas Places. The Bailey House was built about 1870 at a farmstead two miles east of Lyndon. The house was moved in 1997 to the city park. The house is a one-and-a-half-story hewn-log house. The house is rectangular and measures approximately 18 feet by 27 feet. It features a double-pen plan, which closely resembles the center-hall plan commonly found in mid- and late-nineteenth century homespun residential architecture in Kansas. The Kansas State Historical Society says the house was nominated for its architectural significance. The state registry is for those structures or places that can’t otherwise qualify for the national historic registry. By 1896, the house was covered with wood clapboard siding, which was removed before it was moved. Bailey was a trained machinist who settled in Osage County. He was related to judge L.D. Bailey, who is one of the founders of Lyndon. The city is named after Lyndon, Vt.
