LAWRENCE — Kansas University says athletics director Lew Perkins has retired, effective immediately. KU chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little said Sean Lester will be interim athletics director while the search for Perkins’ successor continues. That search started when Perkins announced his plans to retire earlier this year. In a brief announcement this afternoon, Gray-Little said that Kansas athletics has benefited from Perkins’ leadership and that she appreciates his service. Perkins said he’s enjoyed his seven years as AD and he intends to stay in the Lawrence area. Gray-Little says the final details of Perkins’ contract is being worked out. However, Perkins will receive about $2 million before taxes. KU said none of the payout will come from taxpayer money.
