OTTAWA — According to police, a drunken argument about food preparation turned into a brawl that led to the murder of Paul Nicholson July 28 in Ottawa. Brandon Ellsmore and John Balbirnie are charged with murder in connection with his death. A preliminary hearing for the two began today in Franklin District Court. In this morning’s testimony, police said Nicholson was stabbed in the back during an argument over food preparation. After he was stabbed, Nicholson left the apartment and collapsed outside, they said. Police were unable to resuscitate Nicholson. The preliminary hearing was to continue this afternoon.
