OSAWATOMIE — With child obesity on the rise, Osawatomie USD 367 is hoping to prevent this by providing healthy snacks to students. Thanks to a fresh fruit and vegetable grant through the U.S. Department of Agriculture, this will allow the district to educate students at Swenson Early Childhood Education Center and Trojan Elementary School about healthy snacks. Teachers are educating students once a week about a particular fruit or vegetable, telling how its nutrients benefit the body and giving students a chance to snack on a healthy treat. According to the Centers for Disease Control, children and adolescents who are obese are at greater risk for bone and joint problems, sleep apnea, and social and psychological problems such as stigmatization and poor self-esteem.
