GARNETT–Residents of Garnett are not going to like a letter the city manager is sending next month. According to the Anderson County Review, the letter will tell some property owners how much they will have to pay to replace sidewalks on their properties, after a survey for partial government funding failed to gain enough support from homeowners in the area. To meet requirements, of the Americans with Disabilities Act and complaints from citizens, city officials have identified areas that need to be replaced. The city sent out surveys to property owners who lived in the identified areas but only 25% of the 50% needed were returned. Without the funding, property owners are responsible to pay for the entire sidewalk replacement. According to City Manager Joyce Martin, an option is to force property owners to pay for the sidewalk project, such as assessing costs to property taxes. If that doesn’t work, then a loan will have to be taken out or increase the mill levy for a sidewalk project. Martin hopes to have the project completed before the end of next year.
