PAOLA–The Federal Communication Commission has mandated emergency service operations to switch frequencies, but it could could be costly. According to the Miami County Republic, switching to the broadband from 700 to 800 mHz could cost the county $3.5 million. The emergency service operation currently runs at 100 mHz, similar to surrounding counties. Miami County Undersheriff Mark Schmidt said that in order for the switch to happen, the county would need to install four more communication towers. The FCC requires the change to be finalized by 2013.
