BALDWIN CITY–With budget cuts being the hot topic last spring, the school board of USD 348 considered the possibility of closing two rural elementary schools. This possibility has advocates for Marion Springs and Vinland elementary schools upset. Since the final school board meeting for the 2009-2010 school year, parents and patrons have sent letters, e-mails, and petitions to the board to keep the schools open. Superintendent Paul Dorathy said the school board should make a decision on the issue this year, hopefully by December because more state funding cuts could be on the way. There is expected to be a large crowd to appear at the October 11th school board meeting, where the potential school closing are going to be the topic.
