OTTAWA — Celebrate this week, which is Fire Prevention Week, by checking the smoke alarms in your home. Ottawa fire Capt. Dennis Nowatzke said many Ottawa homes don’t have enough smoke alarms or the alarms are too old. Working smoke alarms are needed in every home, on every level including the basement and outside each sleeping area and inside each bedroom, he said. If a smoke alarm is 10 years or older, it needs to be replaced, Nowatzke said. National statistics show taht smoke alarms cut the number of fire-related deaths, he said.
