The longest serving Kansas Attorney General, Robert “Bob” Stephan passed away yesterday, January 3rd. He was 89. Current Attorney General, Derek Schmidt, in a statement says Stephan served in a different era, but his 16 years tenure from 1979 to 1995 left a lasting mark on the office, particularly his contributions to crime victims and to consumer protection.
Stephan served a total of four terms – 16 years. He first won the office after surviving cancer, an experience that later prompted him to support legalizing marijuana for medical use. Stephan was born in Wichita in 1933 and earned his Bachelor’s and Law Degrees both from Washburn University.
