OTTAWA — You and other Ottawans will receive the Governor’s Points of Light Award for your campaign to send books and school supplies to the Chapman school district, which was stricken by a powerful tornado. Ottawa Volunteer Center director Lisa Rivers says Ottawa will be awarded the volunteer award in Topeka on Sept. 10. Mayor Blake Jorgensen will lead a delegation of Ottawa officials and citizens to accept the award. Shortly after most of Chapman was destroyed by a massive tornado more than a year ago, Rivers said Terry Heinsohn asked her fellow Ottawans to donate 500 books to the Chapman Elementary School, which was destroyed. Within a day, they had come up with the 500 books. However, Ottawans donated 4,000 books and $1,400 to buy new books for Chapman. The Ottawa school district and others donated more textbooks and work books, microscopes and other teaching and student supplies.
