GARNETT — A complaint from a Garnett man to U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts’s office has prompted the state to lean on the city of Garnett to check its streets, sidewalk and other facilities for accessibility to the handicapped. Robert vVolz has been a critic of the city sidewalks and said Garnett has neglected its responsibility to handicapped and pedestrian traffic for 17 years. His letter to Roberts resulted in a public hearing at the city commission meeting last week. City manager Joyce Martin said the state asked the city to study if the city’s sidewalks, streets and facilities are wheelchair-friendly. The city will hire a consultant and create a citizens’ committee to handle the study, she told the Anderson County Review.
