OTTAWA — A kitchen fire Sunday morning caused nearly $35,000 in damage to a house at 535 S. Willow. Assistant Fire Chief Richard Oglesby said the fire was a result of an unattended cooking fire that spread into cabinets above the stove and into the ceiling. The fire had moved into a couple of neighboring rooms when Ottawa firefighters stopped it, he said. He estimated that the fire caused about $25,000 in structural damage and another $5,000 to $10,000 in damage to the contents of the home. The fire could have been worse but the smoke detectors alerted the woman in the home and allowed her to escape the blaze unharmed, he said.
