OTTAWA — A quilt group is hoping to stitch together an idea that will bring tourists to some of the back roads of Franklin County. With the help of the Fanklin County Convention & Visitors Bureau a committee has been formed and has started on a quilt barn/block tour, said quilter Chris Campbell. “By identifying unique and important barns or other farm structures in Franklin County, and marking those with a large painted quilt block, a self-guided tour will be established through Franklin County to educate tourists as well as local citizens to the importance of agriculture in the area,” she said. The painted quilt blocks would be eight feet square, she said. The committee hopes to start with a dozen barn quilt blocks, she said. At least 30 states have organized quilt barn tours, but Campbell said she believes the Franklin County quilt barn/block tour would be the first organized project of this type in Kansas. She said anyone will welcome to join. Although the committee will meet at 8 a.m. on the 4th Tuesday of each month at the visitors center, the group will next meet Jan. 4 because of the holidays.
