OTTAWA — The intersection at Montana and Sand Creek roads will be a four-way stop beginning next week. On a 4-1 vote Wednesday morning, county commissioners decided to ignore a recommendation by public works director Jim Haag to take down the stop signs on Montana Road and up stop signs up at Sand Creek Road. His proposal has drawn opposition from neighbors. In making his motion to make the intersection a four-way, Commissioner Don Hay noted neighbors’ objections that part of the intersection was obscured because of berms at one corner. Commissioner Ed Taylor cast the dissenting vote, saying he supported Haag’s recommendation and that if commissioners want a four-way, they should commission another traffic study on that proposal. Haag had sought to change the stop signs because traffic has jumped on Montana Road since the new U.S. 59 opened and the north-south road now carries more traffic than the east-west Sand Creek Road. County crews will put up the new signs next week, Haag said. They’ll also install flashing red lights on Sand Creek Road, which has never had stop signs, to alert motorists that it now has stop signs.
