OTTAWA — Ottawa city commissioners discussed a change in which the state distributes certain types of federal highway money. They didn’t make a decision Monday on how to proceed. The city used the special highway money to rebuild part of Cedar Street as part of the city’s five-year transportation plan, city manager Richard Nienstedt said. The change would allow cities and counties more flexibility in doing road and street projects. The city would receive $120,000 this year from the program. The city could use the money for street maintenance, or a stoplight at Wilson and Main, or for sidewalks, he said. However, the state has been erratic in how it sends funds to cities and there’s no guarantee the money will be available in future years, he said.
