TOPEKA — The Kansas Department of Health and Environment will conduct public meetings in this month and in April on the Kansas Surface Water Quality Standards. The Clean Water Act requires states to periodically review their water quality standards. The KDHE hearings will look at six key water-quality issues — dissolved oxygen, bacteria, antidegradation, chlorophyll-a and excessive algae growth in lakes that supply public drinking, frequency and duration of water-quality tests, and changes of temperature in lakes caused by artificial sources. For copies of water quality standards and other information, check the web site at website at www.kdheks.gov/water. The nearest hearings are March 31 at Kansas State in Manhattan, April 4 at Montgomery County Judicial Center at Independence; and in Johnson County Community College’s Carlson Center in Overland Park.
