OTTAWA — The U.S. Census shows that Franklin County grew about 5 percent over the last 10 years. The 2010 Census says the county grew from a little less than 25,000 people in 2000 to nearly 26,000 in 2010. County administrator Lisa Johnson discussed the newly-released census numbers with county commissioners Monday morning, noting the strong population growth in the Greater Kansas City area, and population shrinkage in counties south and west of Franklin County. Miami County was up 16 percent, making it one of the fastest-growing counties in the state. Miami County grew from slightly more than 28,000 people 10 years ago to nearly 33,000 in 2010. Linn County also showed slight growth between 2000 and 2010. The Census Bureau had predicted that Linn County population would drop. The Linn County population increased from about 9,600 people in 2000 to about 9,700 in 2010. Douglas County also saw a sharp increase.
Anderson County was flat, losing eight people over 10 years; and Osage and Coffey counties’ populations fell.
