LAWRENCE — Douglas County Sheriff Ken McGovern says as spring arrives, so do scam artists. You should be careful of companies knocking at your door and offering cheap repairs to your roof, driveway or other home repair, he said. Athough they pressure you for an immediate decision, you don’t have to do business with them, he said. If their offers deals sound too good to be true, they are, he said. Many consumers are left with shoddy or incomplete projects, and the phony contractors have moved on to the next victim, McGovern said. Most these businesses are operating illegally without proper licenses or certifications, he said. If you need repairs or improvements to your home, he said his advice is shop locally and shop someone you know. If you are approached by a contractor, and you have the slightest doubt, call the sheriff’s office’s non-emergency number at 785-843-0250. Be ready to provide as much information as you can about your encounter and the company.
