LAWRENCE — The Kansas Department of Transportation said the Douglas County section of the new four-lane U.S. 59 should be completed late next year. Some grading and minor work remains to be completed south of U.S. 56, KDOT’s Kimberly Qualls said. The project will be done in two phases. Upper Plains Contracting will start laying down new pavement for the new highway south of U.S. 56 in August, she said. The contract for paving the second phase to the south side of Lawrence will be awarded this fall, she said. Repair work on what will become the old 59 will continue through 2013 before it’s turned over to Douglas County, she said.
