OTTAWA — The Franklin County Sheriff’s Department will unveil a memorial wall in honor of Deputy Sam Smith during the National Police Week on the 3rd floor of the sheriff’s office. Sheriff Jeff Curry said the ceremony unveiling the memorial will be May 11. The wall consists of an American flag that flew over the nation’s Capitol on July 23, when Smith died; a plaque from the Kansas Sheriff’s Association designating Smith as the 2010 Deputy of the Year; and a bronze plaque bearing Smith’s likeness along with his beginning and ending watch dates. Smith was killed in a traffic accident near Williamsburg while responding to an emergency call. He’s the only Franklin County deputy to die in the line of duty.
