OTTAWA — National history champs Anna Stone and Lindsay Frank of Ottawa High School are going back to the National History Day competition in College Park, Md., in June. This year’s theme was “Debate and Diplomacy” and their project is about Soviet defector Igor Gouzenko. A diplomat in Canada who was fearful of Soviet dictator Josef Stalin’s wrath, Gouzenko defected to Canada shortly after World War II. His information about Soviet spying and the atomic bomb is said to have ignited the Cold War. Two years ago, they received a special History Channel award for their work on the start of World War I.
