OTTAWA – Statewide unemployment numbers were down in April to 6.3 percent from 7.1 percent in March. This number decreased from the 6.8 percent the state was at this time last year. In Franklin and the surrounding counties, unemployment is currently at 6.7 percent. Sue Henke from the Kansas Department of Labor reports that job gains and losses from the year are a mixed bunch in the major industries. In the month of April the government was the only major industry to post statewide job losses. Eight of 11 industries posted job gains. These industries include leisure and hospitality, construction, and professional and business services.
