OTTAWA — The Franklin County Commission approved a contract Wednesday with Vance Brothers of Kansas City to do this year’s chip and seal projects on paved county roads in the southwest corner of the county. Before the vote, Gene Hirt of Williamsburg reminded commissioners that previous work wasn’t up to snuff. The rock was thrown off the road and the painted lines didn’t last long, he said. However, county administrator Lisa Johnson said contractors weren’t to blame. Instead the rock used for the work was unusually dusty, which kept paint and asphalt from properly sticking to it. She said the problem should be corrected for this year’s program because the county asked for washed rock to be used.
