TOPEKA — A doctor and a clinical researcher have been indicted on federal charges they falsified data in a clinical drug trial they were paid to conduct. Wayne Spencer, 73, Topeka, and researcher Lisa Sharp, 48, Olathe, are charged with one count of conspiracy, three counts of mail fraud, and one count of falsifying information required by the Food and Drug Administration. The crimes are alleged to have occurred from January 2010 to May 2010 in Johnson County. U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said the indictment alleges Sharp and Spencer were top officials for the Lee Research Institute which was hired by Schering-Plough to perform clinical drug trials on an allergy tablet. They are accused of deliberately ignoring Schering/Plough’s requirements for the study. The indictment says Sharp and Spencer used fake names and IDs for some of the test subjects and hid the scheme from the Lee executive director, and signed false statements to the FDA saying the clinical study was being conducted in a proper manner. Lee Research Institute received more than $30,000 for the clinical study.
