TOPEKA — As the temperatures go up, the state has issued a warning about algae blooms in Kansas lakes. The Kansas Eepartment of Health and Environment said blue-green algae can produce poisons that can make people and animals ill. KDHE doctor Robert Moser says if you plan to go to a lake, you should check KDHE’s algae Web site. Algae-related cases hit a record last year, he said. Algae are microscopic organisms that grow naturally in the ocean and fresh water, but under certain conditions and warmer weather, can grow rapidly and become a health risk. Most people exposed to the algae report “allergic” type reactions, such as intestinal problems, respiratory problems or skin irritations, he said.
