HAMBURG, Iowa — Kansas officials say they are closely monitoring areas where flooding remains a concern along the Missouri River.  The state emergency department said some moderate flooding is occurring at Elwood in Doniphan County and in Atchison County. On the Missouri side, where levees have failed, federal and state officials continue emergency measures to protect Hamburg, Iowa, from rising flood waters and the state has closed I29 in northwestern Missouri. Col. Robert, Omaha district of the U.S. Army Corps of Rngineers, said their efforts had an additional complication — two holes burrowed by rodents into a levee along the Missouri are gushing water. The holes were plugged, but the Corp is building a secondary levee behind the levee, he said. St. Joseph faces flood alerts. Col. Tony Hoffman, Kansas City Corps district, said measures have started to protect interstate highway embankments around Kansas City. Milford, Tuttle Creek and Perry reservoirs are full and the Corps has had to release large amounts of water into the Kansas River basin. There are no navigation or recreation restrictions imposed for the Kaw River and there are no immediate problems, he said.
