OTTAWA — Friends and neighbors showed up Monday for the Firecrackers for Madi 5-K Run-Walk fundraiser at Kanza Park and Prairie Spirit Trail for Madison Smith of Pomona, who had cancer. Madi Smith, 9, died Friday, three days before her favorite holiday. The fundraiser was scheduled two weeks ago, but it went on despite her death, said her grandmother Raylene Quaney of Burlingame. Quaney said she was grateful for the many people who gave up their Independence Day holiday for the event, which showed what an inspiration Madi Smith was. Also on Independence Day, the Franklin County Historical Society’s Old-Fashioned Fourth, in which local dignitaries and Ottawa Youth Action Council members read the Declaration of Independence. Visitors also saw old-time crafts and food.
