Franklin County’s Big Brothers and Big Sisters is looking to break old habits and start new traditions. Every time a child gets referenced to the program, the wait time varies: about three months for a girl, and six-12 months for a boy. Program Director Meg Hooper Pearson explained that the pairing process for girls is faster because of societal traditions.
“That’s why this program works the way it works, because people model themselves after people they know,” Hooper Pearson said. “..If you have a societal tradition where more women had volunteered previously and men had not… it’s something we’re working to break a cycle in.”
Hooper Pearson said volunteering only requires 1-4 hours a week and anyone interested in helping the program can call 785-214-8141 or check online at www.KansasBigs.org
