TOPEKA – Parents, don’t leave children in cars – under any circumstances – during the blistering heat wave, said Rob Siedlecki, secretary of the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services. “ Children should never be left unattended in a car, even when the weather is nice,” he said. “With the high temperatures and heat indexes we are experiencing right now, even a short trip into a store or to run an errand can become a disaster.” This year, 21 children died from hyperthermia in the U.S. as a result of being left in a hot car, according to San Francisco State University. Last year, a record number of 49 children died because they were left by parents in hot cars. “Those numbers are heartbreaking, considering how simple it is to avoid these types of situations,” Siedlecki said.
