TOPEKA — After using tear gas, state troopers stormed an RV and seized an armed man yesterday afternoon along I-70 near Maple Hill. The Highway Patrol said Paul Berry, 45, Canton, Mich., was taken to a Topeka hospital for injuries he received during the assault. The Highway Patrol said when a trooper pulled over the RV for driving erratically, the driver said he had a gun and would kill himself. A 25-mile stretch of I-70 was closed for the second time in three days because of the standoff. The interstate was closed about eight hours. Officers tried to negotiate with the driver before making the raid. No troopers were injured. I-70 was closed for nine hours Monday afternoon and evening after a self-proclaimed anti-government activist told police he had planted dangerous chemicals in a Junction City motel. State troopers caught up with Christopher Spence, 50, Conway, Ark., on I-70. Junction City police said no chemicals were found in the motel room or in Spence’s pickup.
