OTTAWA — Daylight Savings Time ended this week on early Sunday morning, and if you missed it, you probably know now. But Ottawa Fire Chief Jeff Carner said it’s still a good time to change the batteries in your smoke detectors. It’s the 24th anniversary of the “Change Your Clock Change Your Battery” program, sponsored by energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs, which reminds Americans to change and test the batteries in home smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. It’s simplest way to protect your family, Carner said. Most fire fatalities happen at night when families are sleeping and working detectors can save lives, he said. Carner said his department is willing to offer advice to anyone about the placement and number of smoke detectors in the home. The department has free smoke detectors for Ottawa residents, and Carner said his firefighters will even help install them.
