GARDNER — The Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad reported thieves stole about 800 feet of an inch-and-quarter copper cable and 500 feet of heavy electrical wire sometime last week. The news Web site Gardner Edge reports the railroad had planned to bury the wire and cable along its tracks as part of its effort to build a new intermodal between Edgerton and Gardner. The Web site says the cable was cut to manageable lengths and taken. The Gardner police asks people to be on the lookout for large amounts of black smoke that continues for hours. Police said the copper brings more money if the rubber insulation is burned off the copper.
