GARNETT — Anderson County commissioners recently talked with the county’s former planning and zoning director about taking over the Welda sewer district and being sanitation officer on a part-time basis. Tom Young served six years as the county’s planning and zoning director until he resigned in September 2010. He also served as the operator for the Welda sewer district since it was organized in 2005. The Anderson County Review reported that Young asked for $600 per month and to be included in the county’s health insurance pool. However, commissioners told Young part-time employees are not eligible for health insurance coverage. County engineer Paul Moss took over the sewer district after Young left until his own resignation last September. Commissioners have not hired an engineer and have tried to divide engineer responsibilities among other positions in the to save costs. The state ordered Welda to build a sewer system about 20 years ago. Part of the system’s cost was paid by a federal grant but the rest of the costs are paid by Welda residents. Because Welda is unincorporated, Anderson County operates the system.
