OTTAWA — A Fort Hays State professor’s study suggests that Franklin County and the surrounding area could have a big advantage in attracting new businesses or industries.
Mike Walker’s study says because about 94,000 potential employees are willing to commute a half-hour or so, new employers can build in Franklin County and be sure they’ll have enough qualified workers, often a crucial consideration for relocating businesses. Ottawa-Franklin County Economic Development president Blaine Finch said Walker’s work-force study offers several opportunities for recruiting new employers, including distribution centers. He said a surprising number of potential employees also expressed interest in working for manufacturing plants. The study indicates that the area could attract a diversified base of businesses and industries, Finch said. Walker presented the results of his work-force study to government and business leaders Wednesday. The study is a first step in recruiting new employers, Finch said. Local leaders say the study will help them tailor their strategy to attract new employers.
