TOPEKA — A Topeka sheet metal company is one of those companies that plan to bid on a multimillion-dollar contract to replace the Statehouse’s leaky copper roof and dome. The Topeka Capital-Journal reported that Stevenson Company is the only Kansas contractor among 14 firms that submitted pre-bid applications. The 14 applicants will be interviewed by architects to determine if they are qualified to do the work. Two of the pre-bidders are from Kansas City, with the rest scattered across the country. The project will replace the dome’s leaking copper shell and underlying rotten wood and the copper sections of roof on the Statehouse’s four wings. The work would cost a little more than $21.5 million. Renovation work on the Statehouse has been under way more than 10 years. The renovations have gone way over their initial estimated cost of $90 million. Some estimates now place it between $300 million and $350 million.
